Description

GT Nutrient Film Technique (NFT) System is a classic, water-efficient hydroponic growing system that recirculates a continuous thin film of nutrient solution across the bare roots of your plants, delivering oxygen, water and nutrients simultaneously without any growing medium. We have been supplying NFT systems to UK hydroponic growers since 2017, and the Nutrient Film Technique remains one of the most productive and resource-efficient methods of large-scale indoor cultivation available.

How Nutrient Film Technique Works

In an NFT system, plants are held in net pots positioned in angled channels. A pump continuously delivers a shallow stream of nutrient solution along the base of each channel — the “film” — which flows over the root mat before draining back into the reservoir below. The upper portion of the roots is exposed to air and oxygen, while the lower portion trails through the nutrient film. This combination of high oxygenation and constant nutrient availability creates near-ideal root zone conditions for rapid, vigorous growth.

Because there is no growing medium to retain moisture, NFT systems have very little buffer for pump failure — roots dry out quickly if the pump stops. However, this characteristic also means the system is highly responsive to changes in your nutrient programme, with adjustments taking effect almost immediately. NFT is widely used in commercial hydroponic lettuce, herb and leafy green production, and is equally effective for fruiting plants and flowering crops in the hands of an experienced grower.

Setup, Maintenance and Compatibility

Position channels on a slight slope (1:30 to 1:40 gradient) to ensure a consistent film flow without pooling. Maintain reservoir pH at 5.8–6.2 and EC within the appropriate range for your crop stage. Clean the system between growing cycles with a sterilising agent to prevent biofilm build-up in channels and pipework.

Pair with a quality two-part hydroponic nutrient, an accurate pH and EC meter, and a reliable pump with a backup unit for continuous system operation. Compatible with all hydroponic nutrient brands.
