Description

Headstart is formulated for the early stages of plant development — from rooted cutting through the first weeks of established vegetative growth. The hard water version removes excess calcium from the formula to account for the 150–300 ppm calcium that hard UK tap water already supplies, preventing the calcium excess that standard full-calcium nutrients create when mixed with hard mains water.

Target EC 1.0–1.4 mS/cm for young plants; adjust upward as the plant establishes and root surface area increases. Check your local water hardness before choosing between hard and soft water formulations — the wrong choice produces either calcium deficiency or calcium excess, both of which cause similar leaf symptoms that are easily misdiagnosed.

UK tap water hardness varies significantly by region — parts of the south and east of England run considerably harder than Scotland or parts of Wales, for example — so checking your local water report or testing your supply directly is worth doing before committing to a nutrient line rather than assuming. The hard water formulation exists specifically because standard nutrients calibrated for soft water assume the water itself contributes negligible calcium, which isn’t true across large parts of the UK mains supply. Using a hard-water-calibrated nutrient with genuinely hard tap water avoids the calcium excess that shows up as leaf tip burn or nutrient lockout symptoms that are easily mistaken for a different deficiency. Introduce Headstart gradually when transitioning a young plant from a lower-EC propagation feed, checking runoff EC to confirm the plant is taking up nutrient at the rate you expect rather than accumulating salts in the medium. As plants move from early vegetative growth toward a more established root system, expect to increase EC incrementally within the recommended range rather than jumping straight to the upper end of the target.

Store unopened bottles in a cool, dark place away from direct sunlight to preserve shelf life, and always check the bottle label against your water type before mixing, since hard and soft water versions aren’t interchangeable despite similar packaging.
