The soft water formulation of Headstart supplies the full calcium and magnesium content that young plants need, because RO water and genuinely soft tap water provide none of these elements from the water itself. Unlike the hard water version which reduces calcium to avoid excess, this formula delivers the complete nutrient profile including calcium from the bottle.

Using the soft water version with hard tap water would create calcium excess — always check water hardness before selecting the formulation. Starting from RO water gives the cleanest baseline: all elements in the root zone come exclusively from the nutrient rather than a combination of tap minerals and nutrient concentrate, which makes EC and pH management more predictable across cycles.

Reverse osmosis systems are the most common way growers achieve genuinely soft starting water, stripping out the dissolved minerals that tap water carries so that everything reaching the root zone comes from the nutrient rather than a variable, location-dependent mineral background.
