Electrical conductivity is the practical measure of nutrient solution concentration in hydroponic systems — the more dissolved salts in the solution, the higher the EC reading. Managing EC correctly means plants receive nutrients at a concentration appropriate for their growth stage: too low and growth is limited by nutrient insufficiency; too high and osmotic pressure prevents water and nutrient uptake, causing salt stress and tip burn. In coco and hydroponic systems, target EC varies from 0.8–1.2 mS/cm for seedlings and cuttings, through 1.4–2.0 mS/cm in vegetative growth, to 1.8–2.6 mS/cm in peak flowering, depending on cultivar and growing method. How to Use and Maintain Your Milwaukee EC Meter

Rinse the probe with distilled water before each use. Dip the probe tip into your nutrient solution and allow the reading to stabilise before recording. Calibrate the meter regularly using the included 1413 µS/cm calibration solution — monthly calibration is a minimum, weekly for professional use. After use, rinse the probe with distilled water and dry gently. Replace the calibration solution when it has been opened for more than 3 months, as absorption of CO2 changes its conductivity over time. Store the meter with the probe cap in place to protect the electrodes between sessions.
