Why Calcium and Magnesium Are Critical in Coco and Soft Water

Coco coir has a natural cation exchange capacity (CEC) that causes it to bind and hold calcium and magnesium ions from your nutrient solution before releasing them to the plant. This means that in a new or lightly used coco substrate, your plants can experience calcium and magnesium starvation even when your nutrient solution contains adequate levels. SHOGUN CalMag pre-loads these ions into the coco matrix, satisfying the CEC and ensuring calcium and magnesium are genuinely available to the root. In soft water regions (EC below 0.4 mS/cm), background calcium and magnesium from tap water is insufficient to support vigorous plant growth — SHOGUN CalMag bridges this gap reliably. Magnesium is also the central atom of every chlorophyll molecule — deficiency manifests as interveinal chlorosis, and correction restores full photosynthetic capacity rapidly.

Application Rate and Programme Integration

Use SHOGUN CalMag at 1–3 ml per litre throughout all growing stages. In coco, add CalMag to your nutrient solution first, before base nutrients, to pre-charge the mix. It is compatible with all SHOGUN base nutrient ranges — Samurai Coco A&B, Terra Grow/Bloom and Hydro A&B — and with most third-party nutrient systems. For RO water users, start at 3 ml per litre and adjust based on observed plant response.
