Description
AutoPot Marix Disc is a specially engineered wicking disc designed for use with the AutoPot Marix growing system, providing the capillary action that draws nutrient solution up from the tray reservoir into the growing medium above. We have been recommending AutoPot systems and their precision components to UK growers since 2017 as one of the most reliable passive hydroponic solutions available, and the Marix Disc is the key interface that makes the Marix system’s unique approach to substrate feeding work effectively.
How the AutoPot Marix Disc Functions
The Marix system differs from standard AutoPot setups in that it uses a substrate mat rather than conventional growing media in pots. The Marix Disc acts as the wicking bridge between the nutrient solution maintained in the tray reservoir and the growing substrate above, drawing moisture upward by capillary action in a controlled and consistent manner. This passive wicking mechanism delivers moisture evenly across the base of the growing mat, preventing dry patches and ensuring uniform root zone conditions without the need for any pumps, timers, or manual intervention. The disc material is selected for its wicking performance — it must draw solution up reliably without becoming saturated to the point of waterlogging, and without drying out and breaking the capillary contact between solution and substrate. The disc is also manufactured from materials that are inert to nutrient solutions, ensuring no contamination of the solution chemistry over extended use periods.
How to Install and Maintain the AutoPot Marix Disc
Position the Marix Disc in the base of the Marix tray system according to the system instructions, ensuring it makes full contact with both the tray base and the growing substrate above. When the AquaValve maintains the correct solution level in the tray, the disc should remain in partial contact with the solution at all times for continuous wicking action. Inspect the disc between grows for signs of algae growth, mineral scaling, or physical damage that could reduce wicking performance. Rinse in clean water and replace if wicking efficiency appears reduced. Keep the tray lid in place to prevent light from reaching the disc and promoting algae growth.
