How Air Pruning with the Root Control Disc Improves Plant Growth

Conventional plastic pots create an enclosed environment where roots that reach the pot base begin to circle the container, growing in on themselves and forming an increasingly dense, inefficient root mat. These circling roots have a lower ratio of actively growing root tips to total root mass compared to a naturally branching root system, which reduces the plant’s capacity for nutrient and water uptake per unit of root mass. The AutoPot Root Control Disc uses a permeable, air-permeable fabric that exposes root tips emerging at the base to the drier air space between pot and tray lid. This air desiccates the root tip — triggering what is known as air pruning — and stimulates the plant’s natural lateral branching response. Behind the pruned tip, multiple new root branches emerge, each with an active growing tip. Over a full grow cycle, this process generates a highly branched, fibrous root structure with significantly more active root tip surface area than an air-unpruned equivalent, resulting in improved nutrient uptake, more vigorous growth, and heavier yields.

How to Use the AutoPot Root Control Disc

Place the disc flat at the base of your AutoPot pot before filling with growing media. Ensure it lies completely flat without curling or folding at the edges — the disc must cover the full base area for effective pruning across the whole root system. Fill the pot with coco, clay pebbles, or your preferred substrate over the disc and proceed with your AutoPot setup as normal. No further intervention is required. Replace the disc between grows or if the fabric becomes heavily root-penetrated to the point where it cannot be cleaned thoroughly. Compatible with all standard AutoPot pot sizes.
