Your choice of hydroponic growing media directly affects root oxygenation, moisture retention, buffering capacity and nutrient uptake. At The Horticulture Company, we stock a wide range of growing media and soils to suit every system and growing style — from premium organic soils to lightweight hydroton and coco, and specialist blends for propagation and organic cultivation.
Coco Coir — The Most Popular Hydroponic Substrate
Coco coir is derived from coconut husks and has become the most widely used hydroponic substrate in the UK. It is naturally pH neutral, has excellent water retention alongside good drainage, and supports beneficial microbial life that promotes healthy root development. Available in compressed bricks, loose bags and pre-washed buffered coir that is ready to use straight from the bag.
Use a coco-specific nutrient with elevated calcium and magnesium to compensate for coco’s natural cation exchange capacity. Target a pH of 5.8–6.2 for optimal mineral uptake. Coco responds well to daily fertigation in recirculating systems or manual watering with full drain-off.
Clay Pebbles and Expanded Shale
Clay pebbles (LECA — Lightweight Expanded Clay Aggregate) are the substrate of choice for DWC, NFT, flood-and-drain and Autopot systems. They are reusable, pH neutral, highly porous for root oxygenation, and allow excellent drainage. Rinse and pre-soak for 12–24 hours before first use. After harvest, sterilise with dilute hydrogen peroxide solution and reuse across multiple grows.
Grow stones offer a similar profile with a more angular structure that some growers prefer for DWC. Both are excellent choices for hydroponic and aeroponic systems.
Premium Soils and Organic Growing Mixes
For organic and bio-organic growing, a quality pre-amended soil dramatically reduces the need for additional feeding during vegetative growth. We stock premium soil blends containing composted bark, perlite, worm castings and mycorrhizal inoculants. These support beneficial bacterial and fungal colonies that naturally cycle nutrients and improve plant resilience.
We also stock perlite, vermiculite and specialist mixes for propagation and seedling work. Our team can advise on the correct media choice for your specific system and nutrient range. Browse our full growing media range below.
